Battle Painters: Complete Strategy Guide
Battle Painters is a chaotic multiplayer game where you and other players race to paint the arena with your color. At the end of the timer, whoever has the most colored tiles wins. It looks like mindless chaos, but the best players use specific strategies to maximize coverage while denying opponents. This guide covers movement patterns, territory control, and late-game tactics.
How to Play
You control a small painter character that leaves a colored trail behind it. Every tile you walk over becomes your color. If you walk over an opponent's color, it becomes yours (and vice versa). The game lasts 60-90 seconds. Most tiles at the end = winner.
Controls: WASD or arrow keys to move. Some versions have a dash ability (Space) for quick escapes or territory grabs.
Core Strategy
1. Start with a Solid Base
In the first 10 seconds, don't chase opponents. Paint a large rectangle near your spawn point. This gives you a "home base" of your color that opponents have to work to take over. A 5x5 or 6x6 block is ideal. This base also serves as a safe zone — if you're being chased, you can loop through your own territory where you're faster (some versions give speed boosts on your own color).
2. The Sweep Pattern
The most efficient movement pattern is the sweep: move in long, straight lines across the arena, turning 90 degrees at the edges. This covers maximum tiles with minimum movement. Imagine mowing a lawn — you want parallel lines that cover everything without overlap. Avoid random zig-zagging, which wastes movement on tiles you've already painted.
3. Steal, Don't Just Paint
Painting empty tiles gives you +1 tile. Painting an opponent's tile gives you +1 AND takes 1 from them — a net swing of 2. In the mid-game, prioritize walking through opponent territory. A single sweep through a large enemy block can flip 30+ tiles, which is often enough to win.
4. The Border Denial
When an opponent is painting a large area, walk along the border of their territory. This does two things: (1) you steal the outer ring of their area, and (2) you trap them inside, making it harder for them to expand. This is especially effective against players who use the sweep pattern — cut off their lines before they complete them.
Advanced Tactics
The Box-In
If you see an opponent painting in a corner, quickly paint a wall around them. Trapping an opponent in a small space for 10-15 seconds can be devastating — they can't expand while you're painting the rest of the arena. This works best in the last 30 seconds when there's no time for them to recover.
Dash Usage
If your version has a dash, use it for:
- Escapes: When an opponent is chasing you to steal your trail, dash away.
- Late-game grabs: In the last 10 seconds, dash through a dense enemy area to flip as many tiles as possible.
- Cutting off: Dash ahead of an opponent's sweep line to cut them off.
The Last 15 Seconds
This is where games are won and lost. In the final 15 seconds:
- Stop expanding: Don't go for empty tiles. Focus entirely on stealing opponent tiles.
- Target the leader: If you're not in first, find whoever is and paint through their biggest territory block.
- Protect your base: If you're leading, patrol your largest area to prevent last-second steals.
- Use dash: Save your dash for the final 5 seconds for a maximum tile flip.
Common Mistakes
- Chasing opponents: Following someone around wastes time. Paint their territory, don't chase the player.
- Small, scattered areas: A single 10x10 block is better than 10 scattered 2x2 blocks. Concentrated territory is harder to steal.
- Ignoring the timer: Strategy changes by game phase. Early = base, mid = steal, late = all-out offense.
- Overcommitting to one area: If you're being blocked, move to another part of the arena. Don't bang your head against a wall.
- Forgetting your trail: Your unclaimed trail (tiles you've walked over but haven't "locked in") can be stolen. Close loops to lock in territory.
Final Tips
Battle Painters is a game of efficiency, not speed. The player who covers the most ground with the least wasted movement wins. Practice the sweep pattern, learn to steal rather than paint empty space, and save your aggression for the final 15 seconds. Do these three things and you'll be on the podium more often than not.
